Description
Mid 19th century. 2-storey 2-window and centre door, 2 masonry gabled dormer heads, stugged coursed squared rubble front, remainder rubble, gable to street slated; lean-to outshot at rear. |
Statement of special interest
Re-categorised as C(S) from B for Group (2006). Damaged by fire 2006. |
Extensions
Fire damaged early 2000 ( possibly 2006). Extensive damage done, structurally unsafe, internal floors removed. Internally left as a shell with half the roof missing. Planning permission for single story extension and driveway. Was in poor condition not wind or watertight. When factory ( St. John's work) was demolished most of the pigeons relocated to Dovecot. Restoration work is being done and the house is now wind and watertight. During restoration two blocked off windows on the ground floor facing east were uncovered.[2]
Former residents
Dovecot was owned by Mr and Mrs Mills. They farmed the adjacent land either side of Laich road. The Mills family still own the land but they sold off the steading which is now a home (Dovecot Mill). Mrs Mills worked just up the road at the (both old and new) primary schools. She was the infant teacher from approx 1950s to 1980s. She always maintained that Dovecot was the home farm for the palace.[2]
