In the  early 1930s the north part of the hearse hoose was occupied by the Paton family:  "whenever there was a funeral the big byre door slid open and we were plunged into darkness".

From the late 1930s, Robert Stewart rented the Hearse House,from the late 1930s.In 1940 It was briefly owned by  William Petrie  who lived next door or nearby in Balmblae. Robert Stewart bought the house in 1941, but never lived there, and used it for his car. In 1953 he bought [[Burnside Cottage]].
